Ghetto Book Notes: The Education of Booker T. Washington by Michael West

Was Booker T. Washington a Uncle Tom or a do-for-self Negro pragmatist? Michael West takes a fresh approach to an old question. He assesses Booker T. Washington's impact on later notions of progress and Civil Rights. He argues that the Washingtonian theory of "race relations" sent black struggle backwards by diverting attention away from inherent and pervasive social inequality. In other words, Washington built an ideology around negotiating for racial harmony rather than fighting for racial justice.

Coconut Revolution: Freedom Struggle in Papua New Guinea

This video documents the freedom struggle in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea [1]. The leader of this courageous effort draws comparisons between their oppression and how Africa was carved up by Europe. His reference calls to mind an African American colleague of mine who was, for a time, the US representative for the "pan-African liberation of Papua New Guinea." The   Bougainville Revolutionary Army eventually won independence for their people in the late 1990s. GI

False! "More black people jailed in England and Wales proportionally than in US"

I posted and then deleted this article because after reading it more carefully I knew the numbers were not right. The original article reported the black people in England and Wales were imprisoned at rates higher than their black American counterparts. This is inaccurate. The article is now appended with the following correction:

According to a range of sources, including the US justice department, about 12% of the US population is black and about 40% to 45% of the US prison population is black. According to Roy Walmsley's World Prison Population List 2009, the US jails 756 of every 100,000 of its population. The corresponding figure for England and Wales is 153. Based on the figures above, America jails 3% of its black population, and England and Wales 1%. This means that a black person in the US is three times as likely to be imprisoned as in England and Wales.

Of course none of that diminishes the fact that blacks in England and Wales, like African Americans, face massive discrimination and are disproportionately incarcerated.

Acknowledgment of African Traditional & Diaspora Religions - The Petition Site

The egregious injustices of the slave trade will continue to linger in so long as the United States government denies the many centuries of suppression of the human rights--especially the religious rights--of African Americans. GI

Marie Laveau
(September 10, 1794 – June 16, 1881)
Legendary Voudoun (Voodoo) Priestess in New Orleans

During transatlantic slavery, the millions of Africans transported across the Atlantic into the North American continent and its protectorates, were active African Traditionalists, who were denied their religious freedoms during and after their enslavement.

The Diaspora were forced to suppress their ancestral religious practices, customs, culture and spiritual values, in lieu of Christianity. Hollywood, sensationalists tabloids, baised academic journals, mainstream media and Christian evangelicals have all aided in creating an atmosphere of fear, ignorance, hostility and myth by perpetuating negative stereotypes and encouraging the marginalization of African Diaspora ancestral religious study and sacred ritual and practices. This system of repression,

discrimination and cultural malignment has continued even after the ratification of the Bill of Rights in 1791.
