Ghana supports Haiti: Mobilization efforts are underway

Update 1: Haitians in Ghana, along with Friends of Haiti: Ghana Responds, are putting together a Ghana Loves Haiti Day on Saturday, January 23, 2010. Series of events include benefit concert at Alliance Francaise with Kojo Antwi, Reggie Rockstone (Becca, more) and another benefit concert at National Theatre and fundraiser/dinner. Stay tuned.

Even as I mourn the massive loss of life in Haiti I am feeling very proud of Ghana today. Ghana is stepping up! The President of Ghana, John Atta Mills, has Issued an official statement on the Haitian tragedy that reads in part, "The People of Ghana and my Government are deeply shocked by the event and wish to express our solidarity with our brothers and sisters in this hour of despair. We are marshalling our resources and will in due course make our modest contribution to your national effort at bringing relief and succor to the people of Haiti who have suffered great loss."

My Haitian sista, Mikelle Antoine, who lives in Ghana reports that Haitians and friends of Haiti are mobilizing; they have already held a planning meeting. She says that "So much is happening. Haitians in Ghana are holding a fundraiser next Saturday at the Holiday Inn. Ghana is definitely helping Haiti!" She also indicates that Ghana radio is abuzz with people who want to contribute to the relief efforts.

The African American Association of Ghana (AAAG), the Caribbean Association of Ghana and Diaspora African Forum (DAF) are urging its members and supporters to do with they can to contribute to the Haitian relief effort.

Perhaps this tragedy will encourage more pan-African cooperation.

The Ancestors are pleased.
