Tim Wise on the pathology of white privilege

dig it.

tim wise on the pathology of white privilege. props for his preface wherein he acknowledges his white privilege (Mr. Wise, for instance, does not hold an advanced degree, hmm) and stresses that "people of color" have been saying this stuff forever. we don't always say it in the queen's english, but we say it...

several points to ponder in his presentation. one that stuck for me was a cautionary note against taking "race" for granted. it was that moment in north american history before poor indentured servants from europe were compelled by colonial european elites that they were mutually invested in "whiteness" as opposed continuing to fight alongside enslaved africans for their shared economic interests. Toni Morrison's recent novel, A Mercy, is set in that historical moment where things, as Morrison puts it, "were in flux."
